River time: a family guide to kayaking and tubing in Mohican

How to choose an outfitter, a boat, and a river day that works for your crew.

Some families want to paddle. Others want to float and watch the trees go by. A Mohican river day can start with either idea, but the useful first question is the same: which current trip is appropriate for the people coming with you?

Choose the people before the boat

Tell the outfitter the ages in your group, each person’s experience, and how comfortable everyone is in moving water. Kayaks, canoes, rafts, and tubes offer different experiences. A raft or tube is not automatically the right choice for a young child. Ask about age limits, life-jacket fit, trip duration, supervision, and the day’s river conditions.

Mohican Adventures operates river trips from its State Route 3 location near Loudonville. Other local options include River Run, Mohican Reservation, and Mohican Wilderness. Compare current trip information directly with each operator rather than assuming their routes or rules are the same.

Build the day around the actual river

Rainfall can change the river’s speed and suitability. Use the livery’s current conditions report and follow its decision if a trip is restricted or unavailable. Wear the provided life jacket and ask exactly where you launch, where you finish, and how your return transport works.

A float’s duration depends on conditions as well as the route. Allow space around the trip for check-in, transport, lunch, and tired children. The park’s Clear Fork landmarks and the commercial river-trip corridor are different places; our discovery map links you to outfitters rather than treating every park bridge as a rental launch.

A simple river-day packing plan

Bring footwear that stays on, sun protection, drinking water, and a dry change of clothes for afterward. Keep valuables in an appropriate dry bag and follow the operator’s rules about coolers and other equipment. Pack only what you can comfortably manage on the trip.

End the afternoon with an easy meal or time at your accommodation. When comparing nearby stays, check the distance to your chosen livery’s check-in location. A property described as “riverfront” may still be a drive from the outfitter you’ve chosen.
